Phantom Brave The Lost Hero introduces Marona, a young girl with the ability to communicate with the spirits of the dead. She travels the oceanic game world of Ivoire with the ghost Ash, helping the inhabitants along the way. Their travels are interrupted by an attack by a fleet of ghost ships, which leads to Marona being separated from Ash. This event kicks off her campaign against the aquatic aggressors.

In Phantom Brave The Lost Hero, Marona forms an alliance with a new companion, Apricot, after an encounter with a ghost fleet. Their shared goal shifts to finding the legendary crew that previously defeated these spectral foes. Players direct units in battle in this strategy RPG using the Confine system, a mechanic that summons recruited ghostly allies by binding their essences to physical objects in the area. The game’s environments use gridless maps, making it easier to deploy units by allowing free movement across the terrain in turn-based encounters.

You’ll need to build your own battle party by choosing from over 50 different types of creatures available for recruitment. The Confine mechanic directly affects the spirit’s stats in battle, which change depending on the specific item its essence occupies on the battlefield. Spirit essences can also combine with special gadgets to gain access to attacks that are slow to execute but pack a big punch. Additionally, Marona is able to directly merge with spirits through the Confriend process, changing her appearance and unlocking special moves to use in battle.
