WAR RATS The Rat em Up depicts the Great Rat War, pitting gamers against armies of TechnoRats. In this world inhabited solely by rats, the TechnoRat entity, a single consciousness of rodent cyborgs, seeks to consume all organic matter and transform it into metallic constructs. The gameplay features side-scrolling combat where players must fight alongside hired units to reclaim the land of Ratopia. The objective is to push back enemy forces and seize a foothold in the enemy base.

The gameplay of WAR RATS The Rat em Up combines run and gun shooter mechanics with tower defense and base-building aspects. The player manages resources, purchases various weapons and equipment using credits (CHz), and tactically places soldiers in battle. Success requires coordinating attacks with the placement of defensive structures such as turrets, walls, and resource generators. Skirmishes feature blood and violence, in keeping with the stated influences of some 90s titles.

The gameplay is built on the roguelike principle: the player has one life to overcome areas on the way to TechnoRat’s headquarters. Failure resets the progress of the run, but collected CHz are spent on permanent stat upgrades for future attempts. The optional Iron Rat mode increases the difficulty by requiring you to start from level 1 upon death, but allows you to keep your earned upgrades. In addition, Skirmish mode allows you to participate in battles on selected maps outside of the main campaign of this game, using a visual style hand-made by artist wootusart.
