Dual Gear — is a turn-based strategy game clearly inspired by the Japanese mecha anime, with a focus on tactical aspects and unit control. It was created by a debuting team of five from Thailand. The core of the game is a battle with squads led by artificial intelligence in a story campaign to please for at least 30 hours. Dual Gear takes place in 2064 when a new energy source was discovered in space. Construction of a complex called Gaia Belt began almost immediately in the hopes of gaining valuable resources.
The result of this project was the rapid development of robotics and space technology. Less than 40 years later, in 2101, the facility fell victim to a terrorist attack that also caused significant damage to the Earth itself. Trinity Element, the company responsible for protecting the Gaia Belt, ditched the development of space technology in favor of the military industry, selling the results of its work to the combat units of Dual Gear — to organizations around the world, including the player. The unit is managed in the database from the command center screen. First of all, it requires a set of pilots from the player, who will then be assigned to control individual combat units. Noteworthy is the fact that each of the pilots gains experience, develops their skills and acquires new ones.
With a team of pilots, the player can control the Mechs on their own. Each unit consists of five modules: head, cockpit, shoulders, legs, and a «backpack». All parts are interchangeable, which forces us to make choices depending on our play style — for example, heavier and more armored legs will use more movement points than their lighter counterparts. The appearance of the furs can also be personalized by changing the color or pattern of the camouflage. The equipment is complemented by weapons that can be mounted on arms, legs and a «backpack»; Assault, automatic and sniper rifles, rocket launchers, laser, plasma and conventional weapons are available.
The final stage of mission preparation is the selection of vehicles that the units will use to get to the area of operation. There are several different types of vehicles in the game, air, ground or space, differing in statistics, capacity, or even the ability to provide fire support during a mission. Having a ready-made team of mechs, the player can go to the Dual Gear core — to complete successive missions from the story campaign. Each of them can be repeated any number of times; the game even encourages exploration — some of them have hidden extra parts for mechs, exploration, or hidden storylines. It is important to note that when re-performing tasks, it is possible to impose special obstacles in exchange for the best reward for completing the task. Additional bonuses will also be earned following the recommendations presented during the briefing.
The battles in Dual Gear are turn-based, in which the player takes control of each of the vehicles belonging to the squad. When manipulating a Mech, pay attention to the two resources used during your turn: the Inference Generator (GP) and Action Points (AP). GP is mainly used while moving, but also enhances some active skills that are strictly dependent on the weapon used. AP, on the other hand, are only used to use active abilities. It is important to note that, despite the turn-based system, the player’s units can attack in turn while moving. When the player stops, enemy fire also stops, allowing you to plan and analyze your next moves. Damage taken extends to armor and fur components — each of them can be destroyed, which has a real, noticeable impact on the outcome of the battle.
