Armored Brigade Czechoslovakia and Netherlands — is a real-time tactical war game set in a hypothetical confrontation between NATO and Allies under the Warsaw Pact. When the Cold War became hot, Europe was once again torn by conflict. With this expansion, two new countries, Czechoslovakia and the Netherlands, were added to the group of armies. The new game factions presented in this expansion have a different army composition and organizational structure, adding more tactical capabilities and complicating at the operational level.
Czechoslovakia — prior to the 1968 intervention, the Czechoslovak People’s Army was respected both in terms of capabilities and reliability, and Czechoslovakia was the only member of the Warsaw Pact in which no Soviet troops had been stationed so far. Offensive warfare was seen as the main and basic form of combat and the main tool for victory over the enemy. However, the armed forces underwent a political purge after a brief period of reform in the late 1960s, culminating in the invasion of the armies of five other Warsaw Pact members. A large number of officers who supported the reform movement either resigned voluntarily or were expelled.
Western analysts disagree as to whether the Czechoslovak armed forces ever regained their size, quality, and fighting spirit before the invasion in the late 1980s. Some questioned their reliability in a protracted offensive war in Western Europe or in a war that was bad for the Warsaw Pact forces. Other outside analysts believed that the Czechoslovak armed forces were well trained, equipped and motivated, and that they were quite capable of bearing their share of Warsaw Pact operations, especially in order to protect their homeland. Although the tactical organization was largely Soviet-style, there were some local variations and modifications in other Warsaw Pact armies. Due to the large domestic industrial base before communist rule, much of the small arms, crew-supplied weapons, and even vehicles used by Czechoslovak troops were designed and manufactured on site, sometimes requiring small changes to Soviet organization standards for small units.
