These games adopt a 'grand tactical' scale, involving regiment, battalion, company, and platoon-sized units varying by game, with game turns representing brief real-time periods, ranging from one or two days to just a few hours. One of the distinctive features that sets the Battle series apart from other SGS titles is its unit activation system. Not all units can move and engage in combat during a single turn; their actions depend on whether they have been activated.

Activation limits fluctuate depending on the specific battles or episodes within them. Step into the heart of Stalingrad, one of the most renowned and blood-soaked battles of World War II, considered by many as a pivotal moment in the conflict. In this game, players have the opportunity to take on both sides, either as the German forces or the Soviet army, competing against each other in play-by-email PBEM matches or in a hot seat setting, or even challenging AI opponents.

SGS Battle for Stalingrad unfolds during the period from September to November 1942 (the battle itself spanned from August 23, 1942, to February 2, 1943), capturing the events leading up to the encirclement of Stalingrad. As the game concludes in mid-November, the fate of the besieged German troops is decided. Will you, as the player, manage to capture Stalingrad before the Soviet counter-offensive (November 19 to February 2, 1943), thereby throwing a wrench into Moscow’s plans? Or, if playing as the Soviet forces, can you hold the city more effectively, pushing the Germans into an even more precarious situation than they faced historically during your counter-offensive? Every block of the city becomes the battleground for a thousand conflicts. The game boasts a grand campaign scenario, covering the battle’s progression from September to November, along with additional scenarios of varying lengths and starting points, focusing on specific areas such as the Tractor Works Factory, Mamaiev Kurgan, the Last German Assault, and more.

Players will also encounter historically accurate events throughout the game. These events enhance immersion by aligning with historical realities, meticulously researched to bring a heightened sense of interactivity to the gameplay experience, akin to exploring a highly engaging history book.

• The Factories: Another intermediate scenario, focusing on the assault of Stalingrad’s three major factories (Dzerzhinsky/Stalingrad Tractor Works, Red October Gun Foundry, and Red Barricade Steel Plant), taking place from October 13 to November 2, 1942.
• Operation Hubertus: An intermediate scenario recounting the last German assault in Stalingrad from November 11 to 13, 1942, against the 138th Rifle Division holding worker settlements.
