SGS Fall Weiss (White Plan in German, the codename for the operation) encapsulates the Polish campaign from September to October 1939. World War II’s commencement was officially marked by Germany’s invasion of Poland on September 1, 1939. This «official» start date is noteworthy because Hitler initially aimed to initiate the operation on August 26. Due to diplomatic considerations, the launch was postponed. However, not all of the specialized units responsible for actions behind Polish lines received the counter-order in time, leading to various skirmishes. German forces displayed swiftness, brutality, and an appearance of invincibility, often attributed to the concept known as «blitzkrieg.» Interestingly, the term «blitzkrieg» was coined by Western journalists and was not strictly a formal military doctrine. The Germans themselves did not employ the term. Instead, it was an astute application of technological advancements in motorization and radio communication, coupled with the strategic use of tanks, drawing from ideas developed by several military thinkers over the preceding two decades.
SGS Fall Weiss operates as a turn-based game, with each turn representing two days of real-time events in a campaign that spans 19 turns (plus a preparatory «pre-turn» to select subsequent options). Units, represented as counters, are organized at the division, brigade, or regiment level, with some battalions or battalion-equivalent units included. Consequently, the game operates at an operational scale. A core objective of SGS Fall Weiss is to offer players an interactive history book, allowing them to navigate the events of September to October 1939 in Poland, including the Slovakian and Soviet invasions with units from the respective countries. Players have access to armored, motorized, cavalry, infantry, and artillery units, along with armoured trains and river flotillas for the Polish side. Air forces are also at the player’s disposal. Success in the game for the attacking player hinges on a balanced utilization of air support, armored units, artillery, and infantry, factoring in the effects of the terrain, such as forests, rivers, and more. Additionally, players must manage cards that simulate perfectly executed tactical or operational actions, as well as events with strategic implications, ranging from bonuses resulting from the use of Pervitin within German units to the rise in Polish replacements due to popular support.
The primary objectives are clear. Invaders must seize strategic targets, starting with Warsaw and Lvov, as long as these two cities stand, Poland will not surrender. The defender’s goal is to inflict maximum losses on the attacker and hold out as long as possible, leveraging the terrain and efficiently managing reinforcements and replacements to bolster depleted units. The longer the German player takes and the more losses they suffer, the harder it becomes to launch a subsequent offensive to the west (a concept not yet envisioned at the time), as history would later recall on May 10, 1940. Moreover, by enduring for an extended duration and depending on events and card play, an Allied offensive in the West against less formidable German troops (given that the best units were committed to Poland) could materialize, leading to an automatic German defeat.
While Axis forces are formidable, they must act with exceptional speed (considering that as time progresses, the Polish player can establish increasingly resilient defensive positions). Historically, the promised major Allied offensive of 1940 against Poland never materialized within a fortnight of a possible invasion. However, let’s consider for a moment that German forces struggled significantly in Poland, facing a string of unfavorable events in Berlin’s favor. Unfavorable weather conditions could also come into play, favoring the defenders. The Soviet invasion adds another layer of complexity to the initial shock caused by the Germans. The Polish player faces an additional dilemma: whether to anticipate this invasion and allocate a relatively significant number of troops to the east or clear the eastern border to rebuild units decimated by the German invasion.
