Last Train Home is a real-time strategy RTS game based on real events with survival elements. It was developed by Czech studio Ashborne Games co-creators of 2021 Comanche and published by THQ Nordic. Last Train Home takes place during the Russian Civil War, an armed conflict that took place from 1917-1922 between the Red and White Tsarist armies. The main characters are soldiers of the Czechoslovak Legion a real military formation created during the First World War from Czech and Slovak prisoners and deserters who had previously fought in the Austro-Hungarian army. This unit found itself on the other side of the conflict.

Our task is to help them return to their homeland on board the titular last train. The armored train serves as a means of transportation across the Siberian desert although it barely protects the soldiers from the cold and as a weapon against both armies. Evacuation from Russia requires many different stops along the way to replenish food supplies, medicine or repair a broken train. During these stops, Last Train Home plays like an RTS. The game offers several challenging missions in which we must achieve predetermined goals by choosing our own strategy. Their complexity depends on many different factors. One such factor is the fighting potential of our soldiers — for example, they are less effective when they are hungry. The chosen tactics also play an important role.

Some missions can be completed quietly, reducing the chance of losing people. However, not every soldier is suited for stealth, so we must pay attention to his features. The death of squadmates and difficult moral choices have consequences that affect the gameplay. For example, we can decide the fate of several innocent civilians by taking them with us or leaving them behind. If we take them with us, we will have more mouths to feed. If we leave them behind, the morale of our soldiers will drop due to guilt. The titular train serves as a base of operations of sorts. Between missions, we can repair it and modify it, assigning soldiers to specific tasks such as caring for the wounded — to provide our squad with the best possible living conditions. Here we can improve our squad reward soldiers and train them, giving them new skills (for example, hunting or knowledge of herbs) and giving them better equipment. At every step of our journey we learn the story of our soldiers. Their experiences influence such things as how easily a soldier becomes depressed or how they evaluate our choices. Last Train Home, however, has settings to limit these effects, for players who prefer to enjoy the story rather than experience the challenge.
