Users create unique builds for their Expeditionaries that suit their style through gear, stats, skills, and character synergies. The campaign provides a dynamic combat experience where players can dodge, parry, and counter in real time, chain combos by mastering attack rhythms, and target enemy weaknesses using a free aiming system.

The story centers around the crew of the 33rd Expedition, led by Gustave and Maelle, as they embark on a mission to end the cycle of death caused by the Artist. The Artist awakens once a year to paint a number on her monolith, and those of that age fizzle out and disappear. With only one year left to live, the Expeditionary Force follows in the footsteps of previous failed expeditions, uncovering their fates and learning to work together despite incredible odds.

Throughout their journey, players explore an enchanting realm filled with surreal foes and breathtaking landscapes like the Isle of Faces and the Forgotten Battlefield. They discover secrets, hidden quests, and new methods of travel, as well as recruit special companions to aid them. The world map offers a variety of hidden areas and allies, adding depth and variety to exploration. Create and customize unique character builds by selecting and optimizing gear, stats, skills, and synergies for each expeditioner.
