Hank Drowning On Dry Land is a third-person adventure game centered on time travel. The protagonist is a masked vigilante named Hank, reminiscent of Gotham City's famous protector, but with one caveat: he's constantly drunk. He faces off against a mastermind known as the Unraveler, who plots complex, meticulously crafted criminal schemes. However, all his perfect plans are ruined by the unpredictable actions of the drunken protagonist, who possesses the ability to travel through time. The game's visuals are stylized like hand-drawn animation, lending a unique atmosphere.

The core of Hanks gameplay isn't physical prowess, but the ability to manipulate time. The protagonist can rewind events to correct mistakes and even jump back to the beginning of a level. This creates a mirror version of himself from the past, effectively allowing the player to control two versions of Hank simultaneously. This approach transforms the gameplay into a kind of co-op with yourself, where to solve problems you need to:
