From the very beginning, The Past Within draws the player into the world of mysticism and strange events. So, the main character needs to deal with a number of difficulties that are associated with the personality of Albert Vandeboom. But he died many years ago, and all the important information remained in his memories. Therefore, in order to solve the problem, you will have to go back in time and tie up the ends. This is the only way, because the future does not develop without the past.

In essence, The Past Within is a set of puzzles. Each «location» that is used to solve the quest is displayed in full resolution. Very often, tasks involve a synchronous solution. So, for example, on one of the sections, you need to set 12:40 on the electronic clock so that it matches the classic wall clock. Next comes a game of checkers and chess, as well as other problems with a completely different structure. In some situations, the system changes the view right along the level to show the next step in the solution. There are no hints, so you have to act «by touch», trying to interact with objects or mechanisms in different ways. Sometimes it will not be completely clear what exactly this or that riddle consists of. For example, if there is a set of objects in the room that at first glance are not connected in any way, you will have to try all possible methods.
