Stripping away the spectacle of large scale conflict, It Takes a War instead focuses on the quiet, grinding struggle of individuals caught in a sprawling geopolitical nightmare. This is an intimate Narrative Adventure that uses the backdrop of a major conflict to tell powerful, morally complex stories. Thomas Mackinnon's vision, published by Pantaloon, successfully realizes the core fantasy of navigating an impossible situation, where the player's greatest weapon is their diplomacy and their ability to choose the lesser evil.

The core gameplay revolves around non linear exploration of war torn regions and consequence heavy dialogue interactions. The unique system is the Moral Compass Tracker. Every major narrative choice whether to save a civilian, betray an ally, or conserve dwindling medical resources is logged, shifting the player's moral alignment and permanently locking off certain factions or safe zones. This ensures high replayability as radically different playthroughs yield wildly different ending states. The Adventure pacing is deliberately slow outside of scripted encounters, emphasizing resource scavenging, healing management, and character driven roleplaying. Progression is tied to gaining the trust of key regional commanders, unlocking new dialogue paths and unique companion characters who each have their own personal story arcs that must be managed.
