Chronicles of the Wolf introduces Mateo Lombardo, the last disciple of the Order of the Rose Cross, on a mission to hunt the Beast of Gévaudan. This pursuit takes the protagonist into a dark fantasy world inhabited by werewolves and vampires. The narrative takes Mateo to vast castles, dense forests, and abandoned ruins. Each location is a separate region on a large interconnected map, which encourages movement between zones as the story unfolds. The player’s progress depends on exploring these areas and finding the secrets hidden within. The gamer travels through these lands in a side-scrolling platformer format, engaging in combat with the creatures that inhabit them.

Success in battle depends on studying the behavior of opponents and using the arsenal discovered during their travels around the world. In Chronicles of the Wolf, character development is tied to acquiring new skills. These unlocked skills are fundamental, as they open up previously inaccessible areas of the map, forming the core of the gameplay. In addition to combat and movement, the world contains environmental puzzles that block Mateo’s path. Interacting with locals provides context and direction for the main quest. The story is further advanced through boss encounters that control specific lands. These fights serve as the key to further progression, and winning them is a prerequisite for continuing the hunt and uncovering the events unfolding in Gévaudan.
