The first civilizations in the Middle East arose in the Early Bronze Age, from 3500 to 2000 BC. The most important of these were the numerous Sumerian city-states and the ancient Egyptian kingdom, ruled by kings who were worshiped as living gods. The Middle Bronze Age, from 2000 to 1600 BC, saw a mass migration of peoples into the Middle East, leading to the emergence of new states such as the Mitanni, Hittites, Babylon, and Assyria. Northern Egypt was taken over by the Hyksos, who ruled as the 15th Dynasty.
