The Fools Apprentice puts the player in control of Arcanist Tharn in a school of magic. You must direct your charges by using spells to direct their learning and activities. Methods include levitation, mind control, memory wipes, and forced movement through portals; survival of the students during this process is not guaranteed. The key task is to guide these naive students towards specific outcomes determined by the player.

In The Fools Apprentice, the creation and management of the Arcane Conservatory are central to the game experience. Research facilities must be built, magical workstations of varying danger levels must be upgraded, and branches related to Arcanology, a combination of magic and engineering, must be opened. Strategic decisions also concern the kidnapping of Golrion residents for experiments. Actions taken in the Conservatory affect the city and the general perception of this new era of unified science.

You will have to solve dilemmas that arise during the game, making decisions that affect the development of the mago-mechanical fields. Creating an optimal learning environment involves choosing specific magical disciplines and workstations. In addition, it is necessary to manage public sentiment in Golrion, as restricting access to scientific achievements can provoke unrest among the population.
